A Mammogram Bus at Susan’s Place!

These free, on-site screenings help make sure that lifesaving care isn’t out of reach for the women who need it most.

Did you know? Women without stable housing are nearly twice as likely to die from breast cancer—often because of delayed diagnosis and barriers to care. Mammograms are important, highly accurate breast cancers screenings that have been proven to save lives. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends women 40 to 74 years old who are at average risk for breast cancer get a mammogram every 2 years.

That’s why we’re especially thankful to the American-Italian Cancer Foundation for bringing their Mammogram Bus to our Susan’s Place shelter last month. The bus parked right outside the front doors, providing easy access for residents who wanted to schedule screenings for the day.

In just a couple of hours, many women were able to climb the stairs and get this critical procedure completed at their convenience.

We’re also grateful to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for joining us to share vital information on tuberculosis testing with our community. They set up a table inside the shelter to talk to residents as they entered and exited.

Together, we’re breaking down barriers to care and building healthier futures for our neighbors. Please consider donating today to support our work—your gift could save a life.
