“Being me, Abigail. Being healthy, eating good, exercising, and staying motivated with friends and family.”
Welcome to the ‘Wall of Success,’ Abigail! Congratulations on all that you’ve achieved.
Welcome to our annual Summer Success Celebration! Please enjoy these inspiring stories and join us in congratulating everyone on their achievements.
Our annual Summer Solstice Success Celebration is a signature policy and advocacy event. Every year, we recognize the achievements of our consumers who have overcome the difficult obstacles and challenges presented by homelessness. Our goals are to recognize the barriers that unstably housed individuals face, to destigmatize what it means to experience homelessness, and to highlight the health care, housing, and advocacy successes of these resilient individuals.ย
This event is normally held in-person. However, this year it will be held online, giving us the opportunity to amplify these stories virtually.
Weโre starting off our Summer Solstice Success Celebration with a long time member of the CFH family. M.A. Dennis won our Short Story Writing Contest in 2019 and weโre excited to have him back in 2021 as a recipient of the Success in Health Care award! Join us in congratulating Dennis on his achievements.
We’re continuing our Summer Solstice Success Celebration today with a story from Faye Brown. Faye recently achieved permanent housing! Listen to her story and be sure to join us in congratulating her as she moves on to this exciting new stage.
Meet Abigail. She is this year’s proud winner of the Summer Solstice Success Celebration’s Short Story Contest. Abigail is a long time CAB member and a staunch advocate for the rights of people experiencing homelessness. In her piece, ‘The New Normal’, she talks about the struggles of feeling connected during the pandemic and what she did to ensure that she focused on her mental health. Her resiliency comes from her past experience with homelessness. She says, โI found out that being lonely and being alone are two different thingsโฆToday I feel hopeful about the future and know I can attain resources anytime. My new normal is that I can see the cup half full.โ

Garrett McMahan is a long time member of the CFH Consumer Advisory Board and is receiving recognition for his commitment to advocacy. In 2020, he learned how to navigate meetings remotely and showed up at every available opportunity to advocate for important issues such as health care, housing, and social justice. He is passionate about helping people experiencing homelessness exercise their voting rights and is looking forward to being able to do all of these activities in person.
